Welcome to the Social Work Corner within the St. James Catholic High School website. My name is Michael Malak and I am the Social Worker for our community. I can be reached at 519-822-4290, extension 250. I am a support and resource to the students, families, and staff by working with individuals and families in order to nurture wellness. Throughout the semester I plan to have information inserted in this website domain that will offer ideas for readers to reflect on wellness issues for themselves or within their family system. If you have any questions on the material presented, please contact Michael Malak in order to “talk about it”. Magic can occur when individuals talk!

In the fall semester of this year I have presented information to all the grade nine students during their period one class. I talked with them about one book resource entitled, “Life Strategies for Teens” by Jay McGraw. This book is available through the St. James library or through the Guelph Public Library. This book focuses on Ten Laws of Life, which are:
 

 

  1.You either get it, or you don’t,
  2.You create your own experience,
  3.People do what works,
  4.You cannot change what you do not   acknowledge,
  5.Life rewards action,
  6.There is no reality only perception,
  7.Life is managed; it is not cured,
  8.We teach people how to treat us,
  9.There is power in forgiveness and
  10.You have to name it before you can claim it.


Whether you are a teen looking for a little help, or an adult involved in the life of a teen, this book tackles many of the challenges of adolescence. I believe this book is worth reading regardless of the grade level of a student.
